Composition-Introduction to Literature: Introductory Letter - Samples from Students | |

Greetings, My name is Kevin. I elected to take only one class this semester for a series of reasons such as my work schedule, planned certification exams and most importantly a surgical procedure that I will be undergoing during the course of this semester. I am currently enrolled at Tidewater Community College, under the General Studies track. I have been taking classes on and off throughout the past 3 years at TCC. The majority of these classes have been geared more toward technical certifications, rather than academic credit or a degree. It is just in the past year, that I have decided to begin my quest to obtain an Associate degree from this college. I am presently taking perquisite classes such as English and Mathematics, but soon will be taking the more focused classes like Accounting and Sociology. The main reason that I have chosen to take this course online is because it will allow me to complete the necessary class work on my schedule. Unfortunately, I am not going to be able to obtain my degree anytime soon, because of my demanding schedule, consisting of things like work, Physical Therapy and studying for multiple technical certifications. I remain confident that one day I will in the future posses at least an Associates degree, as well as many networking technical certifications. I currently work for the second largest Information Technological Communications (ITC) company in the world today, called Getronics. I am working on Dam Neck Naval Base as a Network Engineer for Combat Directional Systems Activity Dam Neck supporting their everyday network issues. Over the past 5 years, I have been heavily involved with computers and various other technologies that have come to fruition over that time period. In my mere five years of experience, I have seen society introduced to E-Mail and even in recent months, gain the capability to check that same technological advancement from any place on this earth at any time and in any weather. I hope to continue being fortunate enough to be on the leading edge of technology as years go by. My goal is to be a solid, professional Network Engineer with the perfect balance of both technical certifications and academic credit under my belt. My earliest memories of reading and writing were in Terra Centre Elementary School in Burke, Virginia. This is where I was introduced to reading and writing for the first time in my life. At work, the majority of my correspondence has been in the form of E-Mail. Since I am a Network Engineer, I am responsible for communicating with our customers mostly in a professional manner. I often find myself having to translate what I need to tell our customers from technical terms to common language. It is here that I think that the reading and writing skills that I have acquired over the years have paid off the most. These skills have helped me to refine what I am trying to say and relay my thoughts and ideas grammatically correct as well. Reading and writing has not been all that "challenging" to me. The one facet that I can say that I have consistently have trouble with is in reading and responding to older literary works such as Shakespeare and other authors from that time period. The problem that I find, is that you almost have to translate what the author is saying just to understand what is going on. I am pretty selective in what I choose to read. I seem to lose interest very quickly in works that do not seem enticing and interesting to me. As everyone knows, technology is constantly on the move and if you are associated with that industry in any way, you must be on the move as well. That being said, I would have to say that about eighty percent of my reading is technically related. The remaining twenty percent I would say is of personal letters, newspapers, etc. I do not have any favorite places to read or write at, but mostly find myself writing at the desk in my room. ^^^^^ Hello my name is Sabrina. I do not go by a nickname so you can call me Sabrina. I'm taking a step towards the challenging world of childcare. My major is Early Childhood Development. Upon completion of my degree I plan to start my own Daycare/Preschool. Once opening my business I will spend time in the classroom, as well as the office. I took this class because it is a requirement for my degree. I chose this online class because it is better for me, having children and my husband and I both working. I'm in the Navy, married, with two children, a boy (1) and girl (5). My biggest interest is spending an enormous amount of time with family. I am also interested in my children's education. They are at the age where they absorb everything, so I take advantage of that. The most important thing to remember about me is that I am a family person and very organized. My earliest memory of reading
is my mother reading Dr. Seuss books to me at the age of three. I can also remember
writing on walls, paper, books, and whatever I could get my hands. My mom eventually
bought me a book of my own to write in. That made her and I so happy. As far as
my occupation, I don't read very many books. I read things like contracts, purchase
document, etc. My title in the Navy is Storekeeper, so I deal more with financial.
I fine the most challenging thing about reading is a boring book. When reading
a boring book you lose interest very fast. At the same time, reading a book that
I am interested in is very challenging when it is time to put it down. Writing
can be challenging if you don't do much of it. I may find myself having a hard
time remembering how to write certain letters in cursive or even spelling words
that I don't spell that often. Being a college student requires a lot of reading
and writing, in some classes. Every semester that I'm in class helps me to clean
out those spider webs that are in my brain. It also helps me to write words I
haven't used or never knew. I not big on reading for myself unless I have to:
but I do read to my children on a daily basis. I spell words on signs, buildings,
etc for my daughter everywhere we go. I'm always teaching her how to write a letter
or letters. I'm not interested in any particular types of books. I will read anything
as long as it is interesting to me. I write better at home when it is quite and
my husband is around. In brainstorm different topics I would be interested in
writing about. I don't have any particular methods, and all I need is a pen and
piece of paper. ^^^^^^^^ Greetings: My name is Larrena but I prefer to be called Lori. My academic interest is Law Enforcement and my major is Administration of Justice. I have not quite narrowed my field of practice down as of yet, but I am looking at either Forensic Investigation or Criminal Profiling. I am currently a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy and stationed at VF-32 at NAS Oceana. I have been in the Navy for almost 14 years and I intend to remain on active duty until retirement. My career goal of Law Enforcement is something I intend to pursue after I retire. I am taking this class because it is part of my curriculum. I chose an online class for one reason. I am going to be transferring to Washington DC in February and I did not want to miss the opportunity to take a class this semester. The convenience of an online class allows me to continue my education and still meet my military obligations. I am 37 years old, married with three children. My husband and I just recently celebrated our 16th anniversary in December 2001. Two of our children, George-19 and Sharetta-17, live here in Virginia Beach with us. Our second son, Kenneth-18, lives in Reno, Nevada. I enjoy reading, listening to music and work. I strive to excel in anything I do so I tend to put all my efforts into the "project" at hand. One of my most memorable experiences was the birth of my children. I was young and single. Struggling to make ends meet and raise my beautiful babies was a challenge like none other I have experienced. I have a lot of cherished memories, but my children are by far the best. My earliest memories of reading are in my bedroom at about 4 years old. I loved Dr. Suess and I had every book he ever wrote. I would read his books over and over until I new them by heart and then still continued to read them. I have always enjoyed reading as it serves as a way to "escape" the stresses of everyday life. My earliest
memory of writing, other than in school, was when I was about 8 years old. I began
writing poetry to express my thoughts and feelings. This is something I have continued
to do throughout my life. However, my poetry is not something I can just sit down
and write. I have to have a strong feeling about something or someone before I
can compose a poem about the topic. Reading has never really been a challenge for me, although I have discovered that if the topic is not interesting, I have a difficult time comprehending the text. However, I have found that writing can be a challenge. Being able to write something that is interesting to your readers has been my greatest challenge. Reading has been very beneficial for me since I use it as a means to escape the stresses of life. I enjoy writing as a means to express my thoughts and feelings. I enjoy reading non-fiction murder mysteries, and romance novels. When it comes to writing, I definitely enjoy poetry and fiction based writings. Normally when I read, I prefer a quiet setting where I
can be alone with the book and really enjoy its' content. Minimal distractions
are definitely required to gain the full benefit of the book. When I am writing,
I like to have all my notes already written and all my research completed before
I sit down to put my paper together. The use of the computer is definitely a bonus
since I can type all my thoughts and then easily go back and modify, add or delete
any of the text without having to start all over. ^^^^^^^ Hello everyone. My name
is Erin. I go by Erin. I am working on my associates in science here at TCC and
plan to transfer to ODU to get my degree in Biology. I plan to either teach or
get into biological research (cellular not animal). I have yet to decide what
I want to be when I grow up. I am 31,
a single mom of two wonderful children. Emily is six and David is three. I work
full-time at an OB/Gyn office as the receptionist and assistant to the office
manager. This semester I only have one class on campus and the other three are
online. This allows me to spend a little more time with my children. If you are
wondering how I keep up with it all, I have learned to cut out sleep. My earliest memory of reading was a book titled "Whose mouse are you?". I must have been about three, but I am sure this is where my love for reading came from. Imagine my excitement when I found a reprint last year for my daughter, who now knows it by heart like I did. I have been reading as long as I can remember. I read a book about every two weeks now. I think the most important aspect of a good book to me is a good story. If the story is secondary to the action, I won't enjoy it as much. I also prefer a book to watching movies. Movies lack about four-fifths of any story when adapted from a book. I find it hard to read or write non-fiction. Even over poetry or plays, non-fiction is harder for me. Non-fiction has a strict guideline it has to follow. For me reading fiction helps build my imagination and challenges me to think in different ways depending on who the author is. My favorite author is Jean Auel. Most likely no one else in the class has ever heard of her let alone read her work. Someone in class may have seen the movie adapted by her first novel, "The Clan of the Cave Bear". The novels are set in pre-historic time, when mammoths roamed the Earth. The reason I have read all her novels over and over again (there are four and the fifth is due out this May after a ten-year wait) is because the story is compelling and it transports me to a time I could never go to any other way. I also usually have a Stephen King book lying around or a Robin Cook. I prefer to read medical thrillers. When writing, I prefer to work with paper and pen first. This allows me to select the most comfortable spot to write. If I write my first draft sitting at my desk in the hard chair, I will usually write quicker and less. Writing on paper allows me to visualize what I want to put down on paper and also allows me to make notes in the margins as I am writing. ^^^^^^^^ Dear Classmates, My name is Holly. I was born in Marion, Ohio on September 3, 1981. I have lived in Virginia Beach since I was four. I have two older brothers and an older sister. Yes, I am spoiled. I got a brand new Volkswagen Jetta when I turned 16. I have always been a very active person. I cheered for six years, danced for five, and played soccer one year. Currently I am attending Tidewater Community College and working at Bank of America. I will be getting my associates this summer. I am studying Business Administration. After I receive my associates, I plan to attend Old Dominion University. I think I want to study financing. After school, I have a few different options I am thinking about. I could either own my own business or move up in the bank. The reason I am taking this class is that I feel that my writing skills are not where I want them to be. I feel taking this class with help me become the better writer I would like to be. I am taking this class online because I have taken some classes online in the past, including English 111 with Ms. Reiss, and I enjoyed them. In my personal time, when I am not at school, working, or studying, I hang out with my boyfriend, Matt. I do not have that much time off, so the time I do have I like to spend with him. If I do have any extra time, I like to go bowling or go to a party with some friends. I would like to volunteer at an elementary school or coach a cheerleading squad, but I do not have enough time. The earliest memories of writing I have go back to when I was in kindergarten. We had the letter people to help us learn. They were just blow-up dolls, but they helped me a lot. For example, to learn the letter N, we called it Mr. Noise. He had a trumpet for a nose. I could relate each letter to something and it made it interesting. Since then, I have learned more about writing and it has been useful in my personal life as well as my professional life. I have used it in my personal life to tell my parents know where I am going and when I would be back. I have used it numerous times throughout high school when I could not pay attention to the teacher, so I would write friends notes. I have also used it in writing in my diary. So later in life, I can see how I was at this age and how much I have changed. I have used writing in my professional
life when I have filled out job applications. I have also used it at my job now,
Bank of America, since they give us so much paperwork. They try to find out about
their employees. What their goals are, what they want to accomplish at the bank,
if they are happy with their jobs, etc. In addition, I have used writing when
we write thank you letters to the customers. Learning to write has been beneficial for me because it is a very good way of communicating with others. It will also be beneficial since I want to own my own business one day or help people with their finances. Business owners are constantly writing letters to their managers, workers, venders, and many other people. If I do end up being a banker, I would have to write letters to clients, telling them what I feel like they should be doing with their money. Learning to be a better writer now will definitely help me later in life. I think the best place to write is somewhere you feel relaxed. You work much better with anything you do when you are relaxed. A place I feel relaxed is outside. Sometimes I like to sit by my pool and write or sit out on the dock. It clears my head and makes me ready to write about a specific subject. Sincerely, for
