Donna Reiss

Dear Classmates:
Let me begin by introducing myself, my name is Lorna . I am originally from Mystic, Connecticut. My family and I are new to the area, we make our new home in Carrollton, Virginia. We moved here from Ewa Beach, Hawaii just over a year ago. Although I enjoyed the fun in the sun, I am very glad to be back where there are four seasons. I am married to a U.S. Navy serviceman and this has proven to be quite an adventure to say the least. We have three beautiful children ages 9, 8 and 7 and are expecting our fourth child this spring.

I have been a Licensed Practical Nurse for 14 years. I am attending classes at Tidewater Community College to eventually obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at a four year university. This would afford me more diversity in the healthcare field and open other avenues to practice my nursing skills.

The reason I am taking English 111 is because it is a required course. I feel it will aid me in my educational endeavors. I opted to take the online version of this class because, as mentioned above, I am expecting our fourth child March 15th, 2002.

My earliest memories of reading and writing go back to grade school. I remember reading along with books to the long forgotten LP’s played on a turntable. My children read along to CD’s on the computer now. The technical advances of the modern world!

I read the Nancy Drew series and eventually the books of Danielle Steele. I have always enjoyed reading for pleasure and continue to read romance and mystery novels when I can find the time.

Challenging reading and writing experiences would have to be memories of high school English. We studied “Beowulf”, it was difficult to read let alone get the jest of the story line. I managed to pass although I am not sure how. Recounting this makes me want to attempt to read it again. Well, maybe not.

I learned how to brainstorm in high school and continue using this today. Gone are the days of sheets of crumpled paper on the floor. The computer has made things easier when drafting and editing papers. One thing remains the same; I have to have the house quiet when I compose any writing assignments. Something that is hard to come by with a house full of children.

Reading and writing continues in everyday life at work. We write narratives in our nurse’s notes about our patients. There are guidelines and protocols we must follow so the other members of the healthcare team can follow through with the care of the patient. In the ever changing world of healthcare and medicine we must keep reading about advances in our field. I have a subscription to a couple of nursing journals and this keeps me abreast of new things going on.

Reading and writing continues to play an important part of my everyday life. I hope by taking this class I will improve my current writing skills. One must be able to express oneself and deliver the points across in an effective manner. I would like to be able to feel more confident in conveying my thoughts in written form and conversation.

I am looking forward to taking this online course with you, my fellow classmates. I wish everyone good luck this semester!

Lorna

Dear Fellow Classmates:

My name is Stacia. I am finishing up my external Bachelor of Science, Letters & Arts degree from Penn State University while I work full-time here in Virginia as a development director for a non-profit. My goal is to graduate with my Bachelor Degree and then to go on for my Masters Degree in Public Administration. I prefer history and courses about people but I enjoy writing and look forward to English 111. My career goals are on track. I currently am a development director for the Making A Difference Foundation and I enjoy the business development end of my job along with the ability to tutor and mentor youth across Virginia and North Carolina.

I am taking this on-line course because I need a course that offers flexibility. I have taken two on-line courses already and understand that on-line does not mean easier, simply that on-line courses offer more flexibility to the student. I am taking English 111 for credit towards my English required courses for Penn State. All classes I take at Tidewater Community College (TCC) transfer credit wise to my Penn State requirements.

As for my personal life, I live here in Tidewater Virginia with my fiancé and three Rottweillers. I have no children so my dogs are considered my children for now and they are a great amount of work. I enjoy sports, participating and watching all sports. Most people that know me say that my generous spirit is the most memorable quality about me. I enjoy watching people do well in life and do not mind showing guidance along the way because I am successful in life and know I did not get here by myself, I had help along the way.

My earliest memories of reading and writing go back to the first or second grade when I wrote a book about “Risky the Rabbit”. My mother still has the copy of the book to this day. I have always enjoyed reading and writing and my parents encouraged reading over television watching for all of the children. I would say that reading enabled me to relax and to forget about the grind of the day.

As a development director for a non-profit I do quite a bit of writing and spend most of my day on the computer or on the telephone with sponsors or drafting proposals or publications for the organization. I do proposals that are one page long and others that can be as long as 50-100 pages long so I have done my fair share of writing in the workplace. Reading and writing are challenging to me in crunch times. I might be given a proposal at the last minute and have to create a winning proposal for funding in a week or possibly a day or two. This is very challenging and the editing process is even more fun. Reading books of all backgrounds is a challenge to me because it allows me to learn of new things. I enjoy reading about people’s lives and history so that I can possibly learn the truth of the past.

Reading and writing are beneficial in that reading has allowed me to relax from the hectic part of life and writing has allowed me to find a profession that I truly love where I can do both. I do proposal writing and guideline reading on a daily basis. Most of my writing has to be done at a desk, if I lay down to write I will fall asleep so I tend to do most of my reading and writing in a desk setting at a computer. I do however enjoy writing letters to friends when I am in the mood with pen and paper and it makes me wish I had used my computer but a hand written note is more personal and I try to do that around holiday time each year.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you on the discussion board and in class meetings.

See you on the discussion board,
Stacia
