Icarus. Winter, Paul. Common Ground. Music by Ralph Towner. A&M Records, Beverly Hills, CA, 1978. AM SP 4698

"This is the 'Village' version of the song that has become the [Winter] Consort's theme over the years. I wanted to take it back to its Brazilian roots, since there was a taste of Bossa Nova influence when Ralph Towner wrote this in 1970. The snare-drum patterns Steve Gadd plays imply the carnival rhythms that were the source of Bossa Nova." Winter is pictured playing a saxophone to a howling creature that seems to be a wolf; one of the pieces on the album is called "Wolf Eyes."

Hively is an organist, music teacher, composer, and conductor. From the album: "'Icarus' was composed in 1961, after the sudden death in an automobile accident, of a nephew. Before his death, Mr. Hively wrote the following explanation of the title of his work: '....The sea where he fell is called the Icarian Sea, and the island where he was washed ashore and buried (by Hercules) is Icaria.'"
