                             Frankenstein Assignment

1. Victor's construction of the creature was to satisfy an almost inexplicable longing he had to satisfy his deep, fanatic, curiosity concerning how life was created. His teacher, M. Krempe, was nearly repugnant to Victor and so when he belittled Victor's wasted study of the ancient "scientific philosophers," Victor was challenged just as he had been when his own father had had a similar reaction years earlier. When M. Waldman was more receptive to the importance of the ancients, Victor began copiously pursuing his ominous research as if forced to do it by a power beyond his own. He was truly becoming a mad scientist.

2. The technologies are vaguely described as laboratory machines, first shown to Victor by M. Waldman, who offered them to Victor (when he would be ready, with the pursuit of further studies, so as not to damage "derange" the mechanism). It is unknown whether Victor actually used those or whether all his work took place in his own apartment. M. Waldman had also instructed Victor which machines he should immediately procure on his own. In his narrative, Victor mentions discoveries he made in the improvement of chemical instruments. He also must have used grave digging tools to get
cadavers, and then dissection tools and chemicals to work on dead people and live animals.

3. While I admire passion for one's work, each of us has a conscious. Victor did not listen to his inner voice, but proceeded furiously to his own demise. My opinion is that he was possessed.

4. His reaction to the creature with horror was sad for the creature, for it never had a chance. It is like the horrible act of young moms putting their babies in trash cans because of their fear and lack of knowing what to do. The fear takes away the reason especially in Victor's case.

Sincerely,
Karen S.
