WordsWorth2 Writing, Editing, Consulting

For more than thirty years, I wrote, edited, and consulted for magazines, newspapers, and scholarly publications. I edited books on a variety of topics popular and academic.

From the late 1970s through the 1990s, I wrote primarily about food, food-related travel, and regional lifestyle for the Virginian-Pilot, Metro Hampton Roads Magazine, and Ghent/City Magazine in South Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake), Virginia.

Inn at Little Washington

For the Virginian-Pilot newspaper, I wrote restaurant criticism, food news and trends, and recipes from local chefs. Feature articles included themes like brunches, bistros, restaurant chefs and staff, ethnic and specialty cuisines as well as cookbook reviews and overviews, and culinary travel. I highlighted Virginia Beach restaurants for the Washington Post Weekend. Articles in regional magazines included profiles of local newsmakers and articles on education, home heating, and golf courses.

For Donning Company/Publishers, a regional publisher in Southeastern Virginia of which I was a co-founder, I edited many books, including a series of pictorial histories of American cities and regional cookbooks.

Most of my academic publications, talks, and other projects are linked from my Academics Website. In addition to writing scholarly articles and editing scholary books, I reviewed manuscripts for several academic publishers and was a referee for several academic journals.
